Excel blamed for multibillion dollar financial losses.

Interesting article in the New Statesman about the dangers of Excel, highlighting some of the problems with Excel workbooks, particularly it would seem the difficulty of validating them and the poor review processes that the products ubiquity and apparent simplicity can engender  ...

The issue is described in the appendix to JPMorgan’s internal investigative task force’s report. To summarize: JPMorgan’s Chief Investment Office needed a new value-at-risk (VaR) model for the synthetic credit portfolio (the one that blew up) and assigned a quantitative whiz (“a London-based quantitative expert, mathematician and model developer” who previously worked at a company that built analytical models) to create it. The new model “operated through a series of Excel spreadsheets, which had to be completed manually, by a process of copying and pasting data from one spreadsheet to another.” The internal Model Review Group identified this problem as well as a few others, but approved the model, while saying that it should be automated and another significant flaw should be fixed.** After the London Whale trade blew up, the Model Review Group discovered that the model had not been automated and found several other errors. Most spectacularly,

“After subtracting the old rate from the new rate, the spreadsheet divided by their sum instead of their average, as the modeler had intended. This error likely had the effect of muting volatility by a factor of two and of lowering the VaR . . .”

Some of these factors have raised their heads in Mathcad discussions, particularly the cutting and pasting of data and equations (often in the context of symbolic evaluations).   It also supports the argument that Mathcad's greater transparency encourages better quality reviews whilst still providing the ease of use that makes Excel so popular (along with the fact that "everybody" has it!)

Support contract needed for changing host-id for a node-locked license?

I've buyed a single user verion of Mathcad Prime 3.1 with one year Support included. Maybe i will extend this contract until verion 4.0 is published. In the next three, four years it maybe that new hardware, especially a new pc will become required because the Hardware i'm using yet is five years old.Support contract.

Must i have a support contract to change the host id of the license? If so, can i reactivate a support contract that has ended several years ago?

Many thanks for any response.

Curve Fitting

I am trying to fit data to a logistic curve as shown in the attached file. However, "lgsfit" will not converge to an acceptable solution. When I plot the function that is returned, it is a very poor fit, no fit at all actually. The data fits the form of a logistic curve very well, as seen in the plot in the attached file. The solution returned is very sensitive to the guess values.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Displaying values in an equation

Hi!

I am new at using PTC products, including PTC Mathcad.

Few hours ago, I downloaded and installed Mathcad Prime 2.0, trial version,

and of course I ended up with a problem.

In fact, maybe it isn't a problem at all.

I don't know is it possible to write and calculate the equation in the following form:

     a = 5 mm

     b = 17 mm

     c = 25 mm

d = a * b * c = 5 mm * 17 mm * 25 mm =

d=2125mm3

Basically, I just need to know is it possible to write equations in the way that you write the equation

and Mathcad inserts numbers automatically in to equation and calculates and show in the way that

is shown above this sentence.

Hope I'll find help here

Thanks in advance!!!

I have a student licence of Mathcad 15 and I am trying to install it to a computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system and Intel-7 processor. The problem is, that the installation stops right after the start. It seems that even the setup doesn't run properly.

VB Script Question

I have spent most of the morning looking through the Developers Reference Manual and the Programming Quicksheets; however, I still have a few questions.

I am using MathCAD Controls and Scriptable Objects (ListBox and ComboBox respectively) for a pipeline calculation and I am having issues resolving a particular problem. As I mentioned previously, I am experienced with Visual Basic in the excel environment and I have gone through the Quicksheets and other help option to further understand how Visual Basic is used in the Script Editor. I understand the structure of the script and the order of the event handlers but I do not know how to properly manipulate inputs and outputs. I know how arrays are coded in visual basic so the syntax is not an issue, rather, I struggle interacting with the MathCAD environment.

How do I modify the
Outputs(0).Value=ListBox.CurSel + 1
in the Exec handle in the ListBox script editor to return the value of the numeric selection rather than the number of the line?

How do I apply this to a ComboBox? I.E. how do I simply return the value of the selection from the drop-down menu?

Also, how can I input values from a matrix defined in the same worksheet to the values in the ComboBox drop down?

I have accessed MathCADs Automation interface but I seem to be going in circles. Once I understand how to read Inputs from the worksheet and display outputs in both ListBoxes and ComboBoxes I know I can progress to more complex problems with my knowledge of VB.

I hope my questions are clear and I thank you for your time.

Deleting Rows from Data Tables

I have created a Mathcad 14 sheet with a data table that I use to provide input variables. The number of rows of data in that data table vary from problem to problem, so I need to be able to increase or decrease the number of rows for each new site. Increasing the number of rows is easy, but I can't seem to decrease the number of rows (unless I delete the whole table and re-insert a new table). Is there a solution to this?

An unknown runtime error occurred. Exiting

I have several linked Mathcad 14 files that were working fine yesterday. But to day I get the following messages in all the files with referenced worksheets with the exception of one.

An unknown runtime error occurred. Exiting

The exception unknown exception occurred (oxc0000005) occurred in the application at location 0x01a4e194.

All the files without the references open fine. But MathCad crashes on these. The one with a reference in the no printing column only works fine.

I copies these to a second folder and tried to eliminate the sections of the XML code that refers to the references in one of these bad files but it did not help. Eliminating the bulk of the body of the xml file to make it look like a plank sheet does work and it will open.

I don't have a backup of these files so I need to recover them. Any chance one of you how is both a MathCad and an XML genius can determine what is wrong?

Yes I know many of you frown at referenced worksheet but this set of documents needs to go to a government agency and show everything. Many of these calculations are repeated many times and it is easier for them to read thru the referenced functions rather than repeating them across 40 worksheets.

Mathcad templates-universal (from release view)???

Hi guys,

has anybody any information, or has anybody tried it, if are the templates, which was created in Mathcad R14 compatible with any older release of Mathcad? If it is possible to open any R14 template in (for example) Mathcad 2000 Pro.
Warning: I'm talking about the templates. Not about the mathcad worksheets (for right meaning)

I will thankful for any replies.

Strange Problem with MathCAD 15 Installation

I was on an extended trip to Moscow recently and found I needed a copy of MathCAD for my notebook (I had it installed on my desktop in my office but did not anticipate needing it on my notebook as well).  Therefore, I bought a copy from a computer store in Moscow, the language was Russian/English and installed it on my laptop.  Everything installed fine and when I open MathCAD normally bu clicking on the MathCAD icon, again everything is fine.  However, if I double click on a MathCAD calculation, it opens in MathCAD, as you'd expect, but all of the menus are in Russian.  If I then go to Tools => Properties => Language, English is selected as the language, however, it's in Russian.  That is, "American English" is spelled out using Cyrillic letters spelling "American English" in Russian.  I'm almost thinking this is a bug.  Has anyone else seen this?  Does anyone know if there is a fix?

Reading date (strings) from files

Hi everybody.
Is there some method to read from a file a column of data like this:

10/03/2006

and to interpret it like a date? That is to have somehow access to its "parts", like day month and year?

It would be anyway useful if one could simply read it as a string!

thanks a lot

How important are calculators?

Of those of you who use calculators in your daily lives, how many use algebraic and how many use RPN? Do you care which you use, i.e., do you choose algebraic over RPN or vice versa, or is it simply a case of what you grew up with?

Do you imagine that there would be a value to having Mathcad run on a hendheld device, one with a decent interface and good graphical display?

rendering xmcd file without Mathcad

$

Hi,

is it possible to render a xmcd file readable without using mathcad? The intention is to use a requirements management system to store the source files and make them available for inspection and to be able to export the calculations into word later on. I know i could put the source and a pdf in there together, but that would be inconvenient insofar as it could lead to different versions of both files being stored.

So, is there a possibility to generate a human readable version from a xmcd file without using mathcad? If not is it possible to use mathcad in commandline mode to generate for example the html version?

Greetings
Hendrik

You have got to be kidding!  This thing is supposed to replace the collaboratory?

For starters, how does one fine new (unread) messages?  It seems one needs to click on all of the individual areas, with no prior indication as to which might contain new information.  And I see nothing indicating anything keeping track of what has been read or not.

Plus the pages are extremely busy, with all kinds of extraneous nonsense.  Not a business like, nor useful structure.

I don't think this is going to work.

adding single line to a vector/matrix

$

Hello!

I have a simple, but rather interesting question here: does anybody know, how to simply extend a vector (or matrix) with a single element (or line). Whenever I came to the point of adding one element to a vector by hand, I had to make up a completely new vector with one more line, copy all elements from the old vector (by hand) and finally write the new element wherever it should be.
It would be nice, if someone could hint me to a keyboard shortcut or something, that simply adds one line to a vector (just as You can add one new line to a Mathcad program by hitting a key on the programming pad). I could not manage to find a solution to this question.
BTW: I am using Mathcad 2001!

Thanks,
Bjrn
