Page wide text block prints outside margins

$

I am using Mathcad 15.0.0.436.

I am also using an older file that was created in Mathcad 14 with minor modifications to some of the inputs.

The file printed fine before I upgraded to 15.

I have full page text blocks that wrap at the margin to create multiple lines of text.

When I print the file out, some of the text 'disappears' past the right hand margin.

I have tried changing margins, and changing printers, but to no avail.  This also shows up likes this in the print preview screen.

I am not using a speciatl text font (Normal, Arial 10), so am clueless as to why this is happening.

I use this text technique a lot and it will be very burdensome to manually change every full-page text block so that it is not full page and also fits on the page.

Is this a bug, or is there a fix for this?

Thanks

Mathcad Prime

Will the new Mathcad Prime coming in December be able to display results on the worksheet with comma delimiters? In other words, can the result one million be displayed as 1,000,000 instead of 1000000 as it is in previous versions of Mathcad?

Mathcad 14 List Box Output

Hello all,

I am relatively new to Mathcad 14. The problem I am having is with List Boxes.

In the attached document, you can see two list boxes. The second reads the output from the first and displays a different result based on what is read in from the first list box. The problem is that the outputs in list box 2 accumulate, as opposed to being replaced. I have tried solving this problem using the ResetContent function, but then I was unable to make the selection (it would not stay highlighted).

I would greatly appreciate any help,

Carl

Converting physical component models to Mathcad functions

We've been exploring a route to convert physical component models like this...

DCMotorBacklash.png

to Mathcad functions like this...

Screengrab3.png

The process works through code generation of the physical component models, and compilation into Mathcad functions. Users create physical component models with electrical, magnentic, mechanical, mutlibody and hydraulic blocks.

Is this method of producing complex Mathcad models appealing? What kind of use cases can you think of?

Interesting article in the New Statesman about the dangers of Excel, highlighting some of the problems with Excel workbooks, particularly it would seem the difficulty of validating them and the poor review processes that the products ubiquity and apparent simplicity can engender  ...

Base article ...

http://baselinescenario.com/2013/02/09/the-importance-of-excel/

The issue is described in the appendix to JPMorgan’s internal investigative task force’s report. To summarize: JPMorgan’s Chief Investment Office needed a new value-at-risk (VaR) model for the synthetic credit portfolio (the one that blew up) and assigned a quantitative whiz (“a London-based quantitative expert, mathematician and model developer” who previously worked at a company that built analytical models) to create it. The new model “operated through a series of Excel spreadsheets, which had to be completed manually, by a process of copying and pasting data from one spreadsheet to another.” The internal Model Review Group identified this problem as well as a few others, but approved the model, while saying that it should be automated and another significant flaw should be fixed.** After the London Whale trade blew up, the Model Review Group discovered that the model had not been automated and found several other errors. Most spectacularly,

“After subtracting the old rate from the new rate, the spreadsheet divided by their sum instead of their average, as the modeler had intended. This error likely had the effect of muting volatility by a factor of two and of lowering the VaR . . .”

Some of these factors have raised their heads in Mathcad discussions, particularly the cutting and pasting of data and equations (often in the context of symbolic evaluations).   It also supports the argument that Mathcad's greater transparency encourages better quality reviews whilst still providing the ease of use that makes Excel so popular (along with the fact that "everybody" has it!)

How would I go about solving an intergral in terms of an undefined constant, such as

I really have no idea and any help would be appreciated

File saved yesterday. Opened today and only 5 of approximately 25 sheets remain

I have been building a worksheet for weeks now. I opened my document today and only 5 of my 27 pages remain. What does remain has to have the "F9" button pressed to calculate. It doesn't normally require that. It opens with everything calculated typically. I was able to open a previous version of the document that was from 4 days ago, but I have lost 2 pages of calculations unless I am able to recover the lost pages somehow. I saved the document and it shows to have saved yesterday right before I shut my computer down for the night. Has anyone ever had this problem before? Is there a solution?

typesetting equations

Is their a way to make MathCAD equations look like the way they do in textbooks? Formulas and equations are normally typeset in italics and basically look totally different to MathCAD worksheets. Maple and Mathematica can do this so I'd like to know how to do it in MathCAD.

thanks

Matrix to vector (M2V)

Could someone help me to with drafting a simple short function that would be able to transform a large matrix into a vector - say M2V function.

I need one M2V function for transforming matrix rows (row by row) into a vector and other M2V for transforming matrix columns (column by column) into a vector.

I am new to Mathcad programming. At the moment my function gives me only the last row (or column). I belive that this is not a difficult task for a seasoned Mathcad user, Many thanks for your support mates.

Cheers

Displaying values in an equation

Hi!

I am new at using PTC products, including PTC Mathcad.

Few hours ago, I downloaded and installed Mathcad Prime 2.0, trial version,

and of course I ended up with a problem.

In fact, maybe it isn't a problem at all.

I don't know is it possible to write and calculate the equation in the following form:

     a = 5 mm

     b = 17 mm

     c = 25 mm

d = a * b * c = 5 mm * 17 mm * 25 mm =

d=2125mm3

Basically, I just need to know is it possible to write equations in the way that you write the equation

and Mathcad inserts numbers automatically in to equation and calculates and show in the way that

is shown above this sentence.

Hope I'll find help here

Thanks in advance!!!

Deleting Rows from Data Tables

I have created a Mathcad 14 sheet with a data table that I use to provide input variables. The number of rows of data in that data table vary from problem to problem, so I need to be able to increase or decrease the number of rows for each new site. Increasing the number of rows is easy, but I can't seem to decrease the number of rows (unless I delete the whole table and re-insert a new table). Is there a solution to this?

An unknown runtime error occurred. Exiting

I have several linked Mathcad 14 files that were working fine yesterday. But to day I get the following messages in all the files with referenced worksheets with the exception of one.

An unknown runtime error occurred. Exiting

The exception unknown exception occurred (oxc0000005) occurred in the application at location 0x01a4e194.

All the files without the references open fine. But MathCad crashes on these. The one with a reference in the no printing column only works fine.

I copies these to a second folder and tried to eliminate the sections of the XML code that refers to the references in one of these bad files but it did not help. Eliminating the bulk of the body of the xml file to make it look like a plank sheet does work and it will open.

I don't have a backup of these files so I need to recover them. Any chance one of you how is both a MathCad and an XML genius can determine what is wrong?

Yes I know many of you frown at referenced worksheet but this set of documents needs to go to a government agency and show everything. Many of these calculations are repeated many times and it is easier for them to read thru the referenced functions rather than repeating them across 40 worksheets.

Strange Problem with MathCAD 15 Installation

I was on an extended trip to Moscow recently and found I needed a copy of MathCAD for my notebook (I had it installed on my desktop in my office but did not anticipate needing it on my notebook as well).  Therefore, I bought a copy from a computer store in Moscow, the language was Russian/English and installed it on my laptop.  Everything installed fine and when I open MathCAD normally bu clicking on the MathCAD icon, again everything is fine.  However, if I double click on a MathCAD calculation, it opens in MathCAD, as you'd expect, but all of the menus are in Russian.  If I then go to Tools => Properties => Language, English is selected as the language, however, it's in Russian.  That is, "American English" is spelled out using Cyrillic letters spelling "American English" in Russian.  I'm almost thinking this is a bug.  Has anyone else seen this?  Does anyone know if there is a fix?

You have got to be kidding!  This thing is supposed to replace the collaboratory?

For starters, how does one fine new (unread) messages?  It seems one needs to click on all of the individual areas, with no prior indication as to which might contain new information.  And I see nothing indicating anything keeping track of what has been read or not.

Plus the pages are extremely busy, with all kinds of extraneous nonsense.  Not a business like, nor useful structure.

I don't think this is going to work.

Mona,

I note that jmg has been disabled as a contributor to this forum.  I surmise that his recent "malicious bug" diatribe was a rant too far for some sensitive soul or other at PTC.

However, in spite of the occasional misguided bee in his bonnet and the often less than tactful way he expresses his views, jmg has contributed a lot, both to the old collaboratory and the current forum, helping many Mathcad users, old and new.

It's a weak Company that can't take criticism, even if that criticism is unjustified (especially if it is unjustified!).

I suggest you re-enable jmg.

Cylinder under external load

I am currently having trouble designing a reel winder in work, picture included below to help with the explanation.

Clipboard01.jpg

If you can imagine the wire coming off the bottom of the barrel and attached to a pipeline thus, putting the wire in tension. The tension in the wire creates a compressive stress in the barrel (hoop stress).

From here I have used to Hoop stress (also known as the circumferential stress) to find the external pressure using Lame’s equation, which is shown in the attached *.pdf.

From the solve block the external pressure seems acceptable, but the resultant tangential stress seems excessive.

Can anyone confirm if my Maths or logic is correct? I have been told that this could be calculated using the principle stress theory or a method out of Roarks, any ideas?

ORIGIN variable in MathCAD

$

The ORIGIN variable is the variable that sets the indexing for matrixes. When the user sets the ORIGIN to a value of 1, MathCAD should start the indexing of matrixes at one. When I do this, MathCAD does start indexing at 1; however, when I display the entire array (by using the W= for example), I still get the zero in the "zeroth" place. Does anyone know what is happening?

adding single line to a vector/matrix

Hello!

I have a simple, but rather interesting question here: does anybody know, how to simply extend a vector (or matrix) with a single element (or line). Whenever I came to the point of adding one element to a vector by hand, I had to make up a completely new vector with one more line, copy all elements from the old vector (by hand) and finally write the new element wherever it should be.
It would be nice, if someone could hint me to a keyboard shortcut or something, that simply adds one line to a vector (just as You can add one new line to a Mathcad program by hitting a key on the programming pad). I could not manage to find a solution to this question.
BTW: I am using Mathcad 2001!

Thanks,
Bjrn
